In most mid-century American collectible pottery circles, the word reproduction draws immediate, passionate responses, usually negative. A quick read of posts on the larger cookie jar collector forums will reveal a loathing of ceramic reproductions that has no parallel in any other area of art. However, most of those who express the strongest feelings about reproduction pottery are making use of the word "reproduction" when they definitely mean, "counterfeit". A counterfeit is actually a reproduction deliberately mismarked for the sole purpose of confusing the prospective buyer into believing it was produced by the original provider.
1 method to gauge what "quality" indicates in a tangible way is to investigate the producers of Asian collectibles overseas. An example of such may be the Chinese Figurines of Shiwan. Shiwan has been referred to as "the Ceramic Capital in China." Shiwan is an old town within the southern part of Guangdong province. Its reputation for attractive and elegant ceramic figurines has been famous for hundreds of years. Plus, the conventional Shiwan ceramic abilities and approaches have been passed down by means of many generations of craftsmen. This is 1 example of what good quality workmanship means in the Asian homeland. In Shiwan, there is a location called "The Figurines Street." The two craftsmen who develop Oriental figurines are Master Lin Wei Dung and Master Lin Wei Ho. They're two brothers who are incredibly well recognized in this certain region of China for their unsurpassed skill. Their statues have been created for quite a few years in this region. Having said that, they've received just about no competition for the reason that no other artists are able to match their specific level of detail in producing lovely figurines. Their figurines aren't affordable, mainly because they are made with such superior skill that they turn out to be works of art in a short period of time!

I am desperate to find this Precious Moments Piece?
I am looking for a Precious Moments figurine that I saw a picture of a few years back, it is not in any of my Guidebooks/pricing guides that are about 5 years old, so I know it is a relatively new piece. It is an angel with a baby wrapped in a blanket and the mother wiping her tears.
Please help if you can - I have emailed Enesco's Customer Service and called every Hallmark in town.
Thanks!
I just checked through my 2008 official guide and couldn't find anything that matches your description perfectly - especially the wiping away tears part. There are lots of mother with baby figurines but hardly any of the mothers are angels (assuming that's what you meant). I am attaching a few links of close options in case they help.
You may also want to contact Precious Moments directly, as their production and distribution relationship with Enesco ended in 2005.
Good luck!!
Most collector groups have to wrestle with education about discerning original from reproduction, particularly vintage reproductions of their art form. In furniture, as an example, reproductions of quite a few period styles are now as collectible as the originals they copied. Severe collectors of period originals need to be extremely educated about discerning examples from the era they specialize in from later made reproductions. Thousands of dollars are generally at stake, so very couple of persons take up collecting antique furniture, jewelry, or paintings casually.
The value of stoneware: The allure of ceramic workmanship remains to this day. Antique hand-made stoneware drinking vessels may be priceless. There's an air of tradition with stoneware since the method for creating them is unchanged given that the birth of the potter's wheel thousands of years ago.
