I'm wondering whether she should be able to communicate or not. I was considering just letting her talk, but that reminds me too much of Narnia. Then I thought that she should be able to communictae through thought, that reminds me of Twilight and a book series called Chronicles of Ancient Darkness.
Shall I just prevent Onyx from communicating? I think this may make the story more interesting and it won't seem like I am taking the easy way out.
Bonus Question: Which name do you think is better for a large black bear; Onyx or Tuntra?

I like Onyx. And I think the bear should be able to like, read minds, but communicate like a regular bear. So he can understand what other people/animals are saying, but is limited in response.
